November 14

Yay! I came home from work after a long long week and found a package for me from SoKnitPicky's Vy, she of the beautiful knitted garments and photographs!

It's gorgeous splendid Malabrigo Silky Merino in Azul Azul colorway. I have never seen this yarn in person, and I assure you: it is about the softest yarn ever, with a beautiful silky sheen.

I won the yarn for coming the closest to guessing the final electoral vote count for Obama and McCain. Yay! The audacity of hope has translated into fabulosity of yarn. I think I'm going to make a hat from the yarn, or possibly a scarf. Thank you Vy!

Thank you also to those who left Thanksgiving dinner suggestions. I now have an oven, a sous chef, and suggestions to make polenta or buy Golden Corral yeast rolls and canned cranberry sauce. That last one was suggested by my sister, and it was indeed a yearly tradition to open a can of cranberry sauce, watch as it oozed out of the can, standing up on end in a dish, and bring it to the table as a quivering mass of gelled cranberry, complete with the can ridges. We were classy like that, okay? For the last few years I've been making homemade cranberry sauce with fresh berries and orange zest, but the "traditional" family style has great appeal. Mark Bittman and I will consult this weekend and make a decision.

It's actually funny thinking about childhood food stuff. We recently had a work party where we were supposed to bring "childhood favorites." I brought fruit salad which was a total lie, as it was not a childhood favorite, but a response to the growing list of macaroni and cheese entrees. I was afraid we would all get scurvy and then who would run the library? But the dish that popped first into my head was something my mom used to make that we called Booger Pie, and it was (I think) shredded potatoes and carrots mixed in with ground beef, baked in a casserole dish, and served like meatloaf with ketchup on the side. It was actually quite fantastic, but marketing it to others presents a problem. At some point, you become old and you just don't want to eat boogers anymore.

I'm glad it got there okay and glad you like it :-) BTW, I have a great fondness for canned cranberry sauce, ridges and all. You're making me hungry!
